The other thing I love about Laos is that the people here couldn't care less about me. They minister to tourists capably, without fawning. They are amiable and polite but fall short of friendly. They present an overall unavailability that I'm confident could be breached completely, but only by learning to speak Lao. The language isn't globally useful; if I learn it, I'm telling them in no uncertain terms, "I want to know you."
